Magical built its name as a text expander and autofill tool for Chrome, with around 300,000 users and a 4.4-star average on the Chrome Web Store. But if you visit getmagical.com today, you will not find a text expander. You will find an enterprise platform selling "AI agents for healthcare operations" to health systems and payers.
Magical has moved on
The extension still works and is still being updated: version 3.119.1 shipped in April 2026. What changed is everything around it. The company's website, messaging and calls to action are now aimed at hospital operations teams: Contact Sales, Book a demo. The public pricing page is gone, so an individual or a small team can no longer even find out what a seat costs without a sales conversation.
That is a perfectly reasonable business decision. It just means that if you are one person who wants to stop retyping the same paragraphs, you are no longer the customer the product is built for.
Why Web Text Expander is a good replacement now
Web Text Expander is still doing the job Magical started with: expanding text shortcuts in the browser, for individuals and small teams.
Everything you need is free, and the prices are public
Unlimited snippets on the free plan, with no cap on how many shortcuts you create. Each one expands to up to 300 characters on the free plan; Plus removes the length limit at €1.99/month billed yearly (€2.49 month-to-month), and the team plan is €4.99 per seat per month. You can read all of that on the pricing page instead of asking for it.
Your snippets stay on your device
Snippets live in your browser's local storage, not in someone's cloud, and there is no account to create before you start expanding. Only anonymous usage counts leave the extension: never your snippet text, never the pages you visit. Export the whole library to a file whenever you want a backup or need to hand it to a colleague, and pause the extension on any site you would rather it left alone.
It works where your team works
Chrome, Firefox and Edge. Magical is Chromium-only, with no Firefox add-on. The everyday mechanics are all there too: fillable placeholders like [[name]], rich formatting, a Ctrl+Space search so you never memorise a trigger, categories for large libraries, caret positioning, automatic date insertion, and right-click "save as shortcut".

One honest caveat
Magical does more than expand text: it also moves data between web apps, scraping a candidate off LinkedIn into an ATS or filling a CRM record from another page. Web Text Expander does not do that, and does not try to. If cross-app autofill is the reason you installed Magical, stay with it.
If you installed it to stop retyping, Web Text Expander is the simpler, cheaper and more private way to keep doing exactly that, from a product that is still about text expansion.
